Carved with the rich history te ao Māori and the pūrakau of our rohe, the Mataatua Waka rests at Mataatua Reserve, Whakatane.
Built by carvers and tauira at Te Poroporo School, Mataatua Waka was created to ride alongside ngā waka o Aotearoa at Waitangi Day 1990, the 150th anniversary of the signing of te Tiriti o Waitangi. It is a replica of Mataatua Waka, the waka hourua that our Mataatua tīpuna travelled on during their voyage from Hawaiki to Aotearoa mai rānō (about 700 years ago).

The Mataatua Waka is carved with the rich history of our rohe, Mataatua. From the tauihu to the taurapa, Mataatua whakapapa is represented, along with ngā Atua o te ao Māori.
